Dear students and parents,
As we move into May we celebrate the season of Easter, and look back on the sacrifices of Lent. St Mary students reached out to their neighbors in the south this past Lent with a successful fundraising venture to establish a school in the Dominican Republic. Congratulations to the students on raising $3100! This compassionate gesture will make a difference in the lives of others for years to come.
As always we begin the month of May with the celebration of Catholic Education Week. Our theme this year suits the beauty of the season: Walking in the Light of Christ.
We will reflect on this theme on Wednesday May 9th during our school-wide masses. In the afternoon, St Mary students will lead their younger peers from area Catholic elementary schools in our annual Walk Against Poverty. The goal of this walk is to advocate for love of neighbor as Christ taught us, and call on our civic leaders to respond to the needs of the poorest and most marginalized among us. We do not promote a particular political stance; we simply remind our community of the need for compassion and care. St Mary God Squad members will visit elementary schools the week before the Walk to discuss poverty and Christ’s call to reach out to the neediest amongst us.
We reflect during May on the way Christ walked throughout his land, spreading His glorious light to those around Him. As Luke tells us, “When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom, He stood up to read and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:16-19). May your May be blessed and filled with the light of Christ.
